Hey there! Today, I’m going to tell you about MY three favorite portable batteries. Not random recommendations — these are batteries I’ve tested, installed in dozens of vans, and where I have real field experience.

Looking for the perfect battery for your van? You’ll see, I’ve organized this top 3 so you find exactly what you need based on your budget and requirements.

Alright, before we dive in, here’s an important reminder: your battery is just storage. What REALLY makes the difference for your autonomy is your ability to recharge it. You can have the best battery in the world, but if your solar panel produces less than what you consume… you’re going to struggle.

The goal is to have a solar system that produces MORE than your daily consumption. That way, you recharge your battery every day and never run out of power.

My Battery #1: Fossibot F2400 — The Versatile

Why it’s my top choice

The Fossibot F2400 is the battery I install in 90% of the vans I convert. And for good reason:

The specs that matter

  • Capacity: 2048Wh — more than enough for 95% of van uses
  • Power: 2400W continuous (perfect for any type of household appliance)
  • Technology: LiFePO4 — the most reliable and durable
  • Weight: ~25kg — manageable for a battery of this capacity
  • Price: ~800€ — unbeatable value for money

What I particularly like

You have all the outlets you need: 230V sockets, USB-A, USB-C, 12V cigarette lighter outlet. Fair warning though — high consumption 230V devices will drain your battery quickly if you leave them on too long.

The small flaw to know about

You have plastic covers on the sides that you need to open for ventilation. I recommend removing them permanently and planning airflow in your cabinet. The battery needs air circulation, otherwise it overheats.

My verdict: This is THE portable battery for 90% of van projects. Unbeatable value for money, top reliability (I’ve ordered a dozen of them, zero problems), and it does the job for pretty much all needs.

My Battery #2: Aferiy P310 — The Powerhouse

For those with heavy power needs

The Aferiy P310 is a monster. We’re moving into a different category:

  • Capacity: 3840Wh — almost double the F2400
  • Power: 3600W continuous
  • Price: ~1500€ — an investment, but justified

Already, this capacity… It’s a real jump compared to the F2400. Perfect for charging an electric foil, an e-bike, even an electric motorcycle (that’s my project on the Crafter).

Big advantage: all the outlets are on the front. More practical for fitting in a cabinet, especially since it’s bigger.

And the crazy thing: it’s expandable. You can add an expansion battery with a simple cable. That doubles your capacity if you realize you consume more than expected.

Who I recommend it to

  • Those living full-time in their van
  • Digital nomads working full-time in their vehicle
  • Those wanting to charge electric equipment (e-bike, foil, etc.)
  • Projects on large vehicles (Crafter, Sprinter, etc.)

Important: With this battery, you MUST plan for a minimum of 400W of solar panels. Better 600-800W if you can. Otherwise, you’ll have a big battery… that empties without recharging.

My Battery #3: Fossibot F1200 — The Budget

The best value for money to get started

The Fossibot F1200 is my solution for tight budgets and basic needs.

The specs

  • Capacity: 1200Wh — for light use
  • Power: 1200W continuous
  • Price: ~450€ — ultra affordable

With this, you can run a Dometic-type compression fridge, charge your devices, and have lighting. Not enough for heavy 230V use, but perfect to get started.

It has the same outlet system as the F2400 (in reduced version). Compact and easy to integrate.

Want to learn how to install your complete electrical system? I created a 3-hour mini-course on van electricity that teaches you everything: from choosing components to wiring, including safety.

From zero to self-sufficient, with my field insights and mistakes to avoid. Only 67€, and you’ll avoid the headaches I experienced in my early days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you use these batteries in freezing weather?

LiFePO4 batteries don’t like negative temperatures for charging. Below 0°C, you should avoid charging them. However, discharging works normally down to about -10°C. If you’re traveling in winter, plan to insulate your battery.

Can you recharge while driving?

Yes! All these batteries have a DC input. You can plug them into your cigarette lighter outlet (slow) or with a dedicated DC-DC charger (more efficient).

What’s the difference with a “standard” battery?

Portable batteries integrate everything: BMS, inverter, charger, control display. Standard batteries require separate components but cost less for the battery alone, though often more overall.

Final Thoughts
